General Course Description

Courses will provide the student with problem solving, critical thinking, and innovation methodologies, built around the Theory of Inventive Problem Solving (TRIZ). TRIZ was developed from studying the global patterns of millions of patented inventions across many fields and the distinct properties of the problems that necessitated the innovations. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of selected TRIZ, and other Systemic Innovation (SI) theories and methods, including problem modeling, solution generation and solution modeling tools and techniques. Students will work in teams, applying the SI and TRIZ methods to solve problems they bring to the class. Ultimately, students will understand how technically directed innovation differs from the standard random solution generation process.

Systematic Innovation for Technical/Engineering Systems (TRIZ) Training

Course T1 – Engineering Contradiction Modeling and Resolution (8 hours)

Identification of system technical contradictions, or trade-offs, and the use of Altshuller’s Contradiction Matrix to relate system improving and worsening parameters to the Engineering Principles that have been empirically proven to address those contradictions.

Course T2 – Introduction to TRIZ (8 hours)

Presentation of TRIZ roots, fundamentals, characterizations and definitions combined with the overview of classical and contemporary TRIZ tools and their usage.

Course T3 – Basic TRIZ (40 hours)

International TRIZ Association Level-1 training including a variety of problem and solution modeling tools.  Students will learn the skills to apply TRIZ in the field and will generate solutions for a real life technical problem of their choice.  Partial courses available (2-4 days).

Course T4 – Advanced TRIZ (40 hours)

Basic TRIZ review and International TRIZ Association Level-2 training including additional problem modeling and solution modeling tools as well as advanced lectures on some tool sets.  Students will strengthen their skills in apply TRIZ in the field and will generate solutions for a real life technical problem of their choice. Partial courses available (2-4 days).

Course T5 – Expert TRIZ (80 – 120 hours)

Basic and Advanced TRIZ review and TRIZ Level 3 (Expert) training including additional analysis and solution tools as well as advanced and expert level lectures on some tool sets. Students will fine tune their skills in apply TRIZ in the field and will generate solutions for a real life technical problem of their choice. Partial courses available (3-5 days).
